This. Is not a parking space. You can tell it’s not a parking space because it is clearly marked as “not a parking space”. Parking somewhere that’s not a parking space is a pretty asshole thing to do. But, you’re really an asshole when you park in the “not a parking space” that is specifically reserved to allow people in wheelchairs ingress and egress from their vehicles, when parked in their ADA-reserved space.
That’s why that’s not a parking space. People in wheelchairs have ramps or lifts or little cranes in their vehicles to help them get out of the vehicle. They can’t open the door and step out like you or me. That’s why you see these not-parking spaces (they’re technically called “access aisles”) next to the spaces reserved for people with disabilities: to ensure they have adequate space to get themselves and their wheelchair out of their vehicle.
So, let’s recap. Parking in a not-parking space makes you an asshole. Parking in a not-parking space in such a way that deliberately prevents people with disabilities from accessing their vehicles makes you a super asshole.
That’s our lesson for today.
P.S. Still not a parking space…
